  5. Free time at centers

Each child also has a "penny box". When I see a child working extra hard, being super quiet, walking in a straight line in the hall, displaying excellent table manners, playing nice on the playground, helping someone in need, etc....I will give the child a penny. When he/she gets a few pennies, he/she can come and shop at my Penny Store".

Make Up Work

Please be sure your child attends school everyday unless he/she is sick or there is a family emergency.  Although make up work can be sent home, your child misses valuable classroom instruction.  Parents may pick up missed work at the end of the school day.  Call the school early in the day to let us know.
Otherwise, missed assignments will be sent home when the child returns to class.

Lunch/Snacks/Concessions

Your child may bring his/her lunch to school any day that you want him/her to. Do not send anything that has to be heated.  Soda and canned drinks are not allowed in the lunchroom. Lunch bills will be sent home the first of each month. Send the lunch money back to school in the same envelope. If your child is allergic to any food, send a doctor's note to school ASAP. We eat lunch at 10:00.  Most first graders are hungry again before the end of the school day. The school sells concessions for $.50 most days. However, you may want to send a nutritious snack (fruit, water, crackers, etc…) for your child to enjoy at recess.  Please do not send soft drinks.

Uniforms
All students are expected to wear the adopted Livingston Parish school uniform. Visit the parish website for details. Here is the LINK. Label jackets, sweaters, coats, etc... with your child’s name. Hats are not allowed.

Dismissal Policy

School is dismissed at 2:25. Students will be sent home in the usual manner unless we get a note or a call from the parent.  If your child is a car rider, there must be a name tag displayed in the car window everyday. Students may not be checked out after 2:00.  Parents checking out their children will be expected to show identification.

Birthdays

Birthdays are very special days in first grade. If you would like to send a treat on your child's birthday, we would love to help him/her celebrate. Let me know when you would like to send the treats.  Please do not send birthday party invitations to school unless you are sending one for every child (or all the boys or all the girls).  First graders get their feelings hurt very easily.

Money

When you send money to school, put it in a sealed envelope with your child's name and what the money is for on the outside.  The envelope goes in the zipper money pouch in the F.I.S.H. Book.

Homework

Homework is very important in first grade.  It reinforces what we do in class as well as teaches your child responsibility.  It is important for your child to learn good homework habits early. Make sure he/she has a designated "homework area" away from distractions. Supplies (pencils, crayons, glue, etc....) should be kept nearby.  Most first graders need parental help to complete the homework assignments. Homework folders are sent home everyday. It is the student's responsibility to complete the homework assignments and return the homework folder to school daily. I do understand that sometimes situations do occur where homework can't be turned in on time. If this happens, simply write me a note and I will be glad to work with you. Acceptable excuses include illness, family emergency, etc.  Graded papers are usually sent home on Monday in a purple folder. Sign the form showing you have seen the papers. Mistakes should be corrected. Vocabulary words and spelling words are tested on Fridays.

Interims, Report Cards, & Grades

Livingston Parish schools use the point system. I will take at least one grade per week in each subject (usually 3 grades in reading). The Interim Report and Report Card grades are based on the number of points earned divided by the number of points possible (Ex. 8/10 would mean your child received 8 points out of a possible 10). I keep a running total of how many points your child has earned.

The grading scale is:
94 – 100% = A
93 – 86% = B
76 – 85% = C
67 – 75% = D
Below 66% = F.

Interims are sent home every 4½ weeks to keep you informed as to how your child is progressing.  Report Cards are sent home every 9 weeks.  To pass first grade, a child has to make passing report card grades and pass the IOWA Skills Test given in the spring.
