| Writing is an essential element in the first grade curriculum. Children love language. As they grow and develop, there is a natural tendency for them to expand this love of language into written expression. In my first grade classroom children are exposed to many different kinds of writing - poetry, letters, invitations, stories, etc... Through lots of modeling and practice, they learn the elements of writing along with the writing process. Because first graders are on different writing levels, instruction is individualized to support each student's needs. Although they are encouraged to use what they know about letters and sounds to spell words, we have a class Word Wall and each student has his own "word book" to assist him with spelling high frequency words. Skills and grammar are taught through whole class and small group instruction using the Louisiana Comprehensive Curriculum as a guide. We write everyday in first grade - in a variety of formats. Children are encouraged and supported in a secure environment where they are willing to take risks and learn to value themselves as writers. |
